Experts agree that cybersecurity incidents are inevitable. It’s not a matter of if, but when an attack occurs; not solely a matter of avoiding breaches, but also reducing impact when they occur. Given that cybercrime manifests through technology, many assume that cybersecurity itself is a technology issue. This assumption makes it easy to forget the significant role that an organization’s people and processes play in cybersecurity incidents. To reduce the impact of cyberattacks and minimize risk, it’s important to visualize cybersecurity not as a technology problem, but as a risk management problem. Our cybersecurity assessment is therefore unique and forward-looking in its drive to understand how your people use technology in their environment as a central method for outlining vulnerabilities and detecting risk.
ShareOhio uses the cybersecurity framework developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) which was founded in 1901 and is now part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The NIST Cybersecurity Framework provides common guidelines for managing cyber risk applicable to any industry, as well as providing a roadmap that can be used to improve security policies and standards that are aligned with an organization’s compliance goals and budget.
In this workshop, participants will engage with SSA FBI Agent Adam Lawson on current security threats and trends in the K12 education sector and come to an understanding of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and its importance to mitigating risk and reducing impacting of a cybersecurity incident. Following, each district will be guided through completing their districts’ ShareOhio Cybersecurity Assessment that is aligned with the five functions of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework. All participants, included for attending this live workshop, will have the opportunity to schedule a follow-up 1-on-1 session with industry experts to discuss results and recommended remediation steps.
Districts are encouraged to bring their IT Director, Superintendent, Business Managers or other personnel who may work on district cybersecurity risks with them to the seminar. Space is limited to 25 districts.
At the end of the workshop, participants will take away:
- A clear understanding of the NIST framework and its direct application to their environment
- A completed Cybersecurity Assessment and a scheduled 1-1 session to discuss results with an industry expert.
Upon completing the Cybersecurity Assessment, participants will receive:
- Clear Results
- Risk Posture Heat Map
- Risk Findings
- Recommendations
